With each major base game version update a separate mod was created to fix/support the base game changes. Build 40 was "Super Survivors!" Mod. If it can be helped, destroy the stairs and use sheet ropes to gain access to higher levels. For some reason, sleeping in your base with NPCs sometimes causes them to randomly die if they climb stairs in the area.
